Road Surfacing

Carboncor All Road Surfacing is used for new skid resistant road surfaces, or more heavy-duty resurfacing on existing asphalt, concrete and dirt roads. Carboncor all road surfacing may be applied by labour intensive methods or through the use of conventional pavers.

Technical Characteristics

  • Does not require heat in its application. Therefore, there is no time limit between production and application. Conventional premix has a three to four hour period in which to apply before cooling.
  • A conventional primer or tack coat before application is not necessary for low specification roads, however can be used where the engineer requires it where high specification roads are concerned.
  • Water is used as a primer.
  • There is no lateral movement.
  • Does not bleed in hot weather.
  • Is not sensitive to climatic conditions; successful installations were carried out at temperatures well below freezing as well as temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius.
  • The road is open to light traffic immediately after compaction, but for higher traffic flow and heavier loads, or at intersections open to traffic after 4 – 8 hours, depending on weather or wetness of mix.
  • Fine grade min can be applied at a minimum compacted thickness of 10mm.
  • The product is non-hazardous and environmentally friendly.

Recommended procedures for roadworks and surfaced areas using machinery

  • Appoint an earthworks contractor to shape and compact the area to be surfaced. This must be done to the required compaction specifications and within the tolerances as set out by the governing Civil Engineering body.
  • Eradicate any vegetation chemically.
  • Storm water cut off drains and the necessary pipes and catch pits are to be installed to ensure runoff of Storm water.
  • In the event that the requirement is to simply surface an existing dirt road, a base stabilising agent may be needed to strengthen the insitu (soil) material or a suitable base material imported to give a strong foundation layer.
  • The completed base is then lightly primed with water to settle the dust. For most bases, three passes by a watering truck is recommended. Sweep excess puddles from surface.
  • A conventional premix laying paver can be used to lay the material at the required thickness.
  • Directly after completing the laying process, water must again be sprayed to assist in achieving the required finish. Three passes with a watering truck is again recommended.
  • Standard compaction according to the particular road specification must follow. We suggest a 2 to 4 MT roller with vibration. Because however the product only requires a light compaction, heavy-duty rollers should be applied without vibration. Compaction with a pneumatic roller is highly recommended for an excellent finish. A steel roller may also be used within 24 hours for final finishing.
  • For best results, allow 4 – 8 hours before opening to traffic, depending on weather conditions or wetness of mix.

Recommended procedures for roadworks and surfaced areas using labour

  • The base should be prepared as per specifications for road building with machinery.
  • The ground is then slightly moistened using a watering truck or watering cans
  • Bags are placed on the prepared base at 1m intervals.
  • Depending on the required thickness, measured square metal bars are placed on either side of the lanes to ensure the thickness and width of each lane of the road.
  • The bags are then opened and the material is spread using rakes.
  • Once material is spread drag a T – bar carefully over the material to even out the surface and ensure a smooth finish. Simply fill any voids or depressions with more product material in order to ensure a level finish.
  • Water is then sprayed over the laid material with a watering truck or using watering cans.
  • Light compaction must follow, 2 to 4 MT roller with vibration is suggested. For roads with higher specifications, compaction with a pneumatic roller is recommended. If using heavy duty steel rollers for compaction, do so without vibration. Again keep wheels of rollers moist during compaction.
  • For best results, allow 4 – 8 hours before opening to traffic, depending on weather conditions or wetness of mix.

Cleaning

When fresh, Carboncor All Road Surfacing can be removed from equipment, tools and hands with water; otherwise they should be cleaned with a solvent as for ordinary bitumen.

Packaging

Carboncor All Road Surfacing is available in 25kg bags or in bulk, ready for application on prepared surfaces.

Storage

Product can be stored in bags for up to 12 months if stored in a cool place. If opened or in bulk, it is reusable for up to 14 days so long as the unused material is covered and then remixed before application; adding a little water to reactivate the concentrate is sometimes required; ensure no exposure to dire.
